Humpback Rocks Overlook

Humpback Rocks Overlook, VA - These large slabs are made of the 600 million year old Catoctin greenstone. This formation was previously a basalt erupting from the bottom of the ocean, but was metamorphosed and uplifted to 3,080 feet in elevation.

Stuðlagil Canyon, Iceland

The absolutely stunning basalt columns of Stuðlagil Canyon, Iceland. These columns are miraculously formed by cooling and contracting basaltic lava and are some of my favorite scenic aspects of geology.
